SCANIA R 620 V8 | Power, Torque & Fuel Economy
Dream Machine with Real-World Fuel Economy
When an owner-driver builds the truck he has always wanted, the result is often more than just a transport tool — it becomes a statement of intent. For Sunbury-based operator Chris Bonnitcha, his Scania R 620 V8 represents the perfect balance of performance, comfort and efficiency, wrapped in a distinctive European-inspired custom finish. But beyond the stainless steel and scroll work lies a practical reality that matters most in today’s operating climate: strong fuel economy and a relaxed, predictable driving experience.

Styled to Stand Out
Customised, accessorised and clearly idolised, Chris Bonnitcha’s Mountain Grey Scania R 620 V8 turns heads wherever it travels. Inspired by the highly personalised European Scania scene, the truck blends classic V8 muscle with modern refinement and a level of presentation rarely seen on Australian highways.
Operating out of Sunbury in Victoria, Chris runs a refrigerated B-double combination for Southern Refrigerated, regularly covering the Melbourne–Brisbane corridor, hauling temperature-controlled freight.
While the truck’s visual impact is undeniable, the decision to move to the 16.4-litre V8 was driven by operational logic rather than aesthetics alone.
After years behind the wheel of more traditional American iron, Chris was looking for improved ride quality, reduced driver fatigue and better fuel efficiency — all increasingly important factors as fuel prices continue to fluctuate.
“My previous truck did 1.7 million kilometres and it was good to me, but I was sick of changing gears manually and the rough ride. I always had my heart set on a Scania, and the difference is very noticeable.”

Fuel Economy that Makes a Difference
Running at typical interstate gross combination masses of 55-65 tonnes, Chris reports consistent fuel consumption in the 2.3–2.4 km/l range, representing an improvement of approximately half a kilometre per litre compared with his previous equipment.
In an environment where diesel price volatility directly impacts operating margins, that improvement becomes significant over the course of a full year of operation.
“Running between 55 and 65 tonnes, I am seeing around 2.3 to 2.4 kilometres per litre, which is about half a kilometre more than I had from the old truck. That’s a significant saving for the kilometres I cover.”
Performance variation reflects real-world operating conditions:
Chris has also experimented with slightly reducing cruising speed, noting that travelling at 95 km/h instead of 100 km/h yields measurable fuel savings with minimal impact on trip times.
“There’s a negligible difference in journey time, but the saving is noticeable. I bought the Scania for fuel economy — it’s money in my pocket.”
Torque Where it Counts
The 16.4-litre V8 delivers the torque characteristics long associated with Scania’s flagship engines, allowing the truck to maintain momentum on grades with fewer gear changes.
As kilometres accumulate, Chris has observed the engine continuing to loosen up, improving drivability and hill-climbing performance.
“It just digs in and pulls. As the kilometres increase, it feels like something opens up — I’m climbing hills now in one gear higher than before.”
The Scania V8 doesn’t just move freight — it creates atmosphere. Somewhere between the steady pull of 3700 Nm and the quiet confidence of the Opticruise transmission, there’s a soundtrack to the open road. The “Scania R770 V8 Power – Heart of the Highway” track captures that mood perfectly, and played through the Scania’s sound system, it feels entirely at home somewhere between Tarcutta and the horizon.
The smooth, automated transmission further contributes to reduced fatigue during long-distance runs.
“The gearbox is very, very smooth. You don’t even notice the gear changes. By the end of the day, you’re not worn out.”
Eco Roll and Real-World Efficiency Gains
One feature Chris highlights is Scania’s Eco Roll function, allowing the driveline to disengage on downhill sections and coast efficiently before seamlessly re-engaging when power is required.
Combined with careful driving technique, the system contributes to measurable reductions in fuel consumption.
During one test run between Erskine Park and Tarcutta, Chris recorded 143 litres over just over 400 kilometres at a gross combination mass of 31 tonnes.
Stability and Driver Confidence
Handling characteristics are another area where the Scania demonstrates clear advantages over older-generation equipment.
“It feels very stable, almost like it’s on rails. You can hold speed through bends with confidence. There’s no body roll and the steering is light and direct.”
Visibility improvements also assist with manoeuvrability, particularly when reversing multi-trailer combinations into loading docks.
“The mirrors give excellent vision and reversing a B-double onto a dock is much easier.”

Living with the V8
Long-distance operators understand the importance of cab comfort, particularly when extended periods away from home are part of the job.
Chris has configured the cab with practical amenities including refrigeration, freezer capacity and a 24-volt oven, allowing self-sufficiency on longer trips.
“Sometimes I can be away for a month at a time. Having the ability to cook makes a big difference.”
Cab insulation has also proven effective in maintaining comfortable interior temperatures across seasonal extremes.
“You don’t feel the cold like you do in some trucks. The insulation makes a noticeable difference.”
Servicing Support Reduces Downtime
Chris notes the value of Scania’s included servicing package covering the first 500,000 kilometres or five years of operation.
The ability to schedule maintenance through the dealer network removes the need for owner-drivers to allocate time for routine servicing tasks.
“Scania sends me a message when servicing is due. I book it in and drop it off. That’s one less thing to worry about.”
Long-life oil technology has also reduced maintenance frequency compared with previous equipment.
A Personal Vision
While already distinctive, Chris considers the truck an ongoing project, gradually refining the presentation with carefully selected accessories, including stainless-steel trim, lighting, and aerodynamic components.
The custom stripe work was developed using European styling references, creating a unique visual identity that distinguishes the truck from the predominantly white fleet specifications commonly seen on Australian roads.
“I had a vision for the truck, but it had to be tasteful. I wanted something a bit different.”
Dave Whyte, Scania Account Manager for Western Victoria, says Chris’ enthusiasm for the truck reflects the strong real-world performance the V8 platform continues to deliver.
“Chris was one of my first customers when I joined Scania, so it was particularly rewarding to help bring his vision to life. We worked closely with him to ensure the specification matched his requirements, and the fuel consumption results he has been achieving demonstrate just how efficient the V8 platform can be in real-world interstate operation.”
Whyte says ongoing driver feedback plays an important role in refining vehicle setup and achieving optimal performance outcomes.
“Chris is constantly sharing fuel figures and performance feedback from the truck, and it’s clear he is achieving excellent results. In today’s operating environment, strong fuel economy combined with driver comfort and reliability makes a real difference to owner-drivers.”

The Roadtrains Perspective
For many operators, the shift toward European driveline technology continues to be driven by the combination of fuel efficiency, driver comfort and predictable whole-of-life operating costs.
Chris Bonnitcha’s Scania R 620 V8 illustrates how modern high-horsepower platforms can deliver both strong performance and practical operating efficiency when matched with considered driving technique.
In a market increasingly shaped by fuel cost volatility and driver retention pressures, equipment that reduces fatigue while improving economy offers tangible long-term benefits.
