Scania: Keeping the Pilbara Moving
Scania dealer Finmec’s purpose-built rental fleet supports the mines, railways and port that keep Australia’s iron-ore export machine running

Finmec’s growing fleet of Scania trucks supports mining, rail, port and civil operations throughout Port Hedland and the wider Pilbara region.
At Port Hedland, distance is measured in more than kilometres.
It is measured in the time required to send a technician to a stranded machine, the hours lost while a rail maintenance crew waits for equipment and the tonnes of ore that do not reach the port when one link in the production chain stops.
Located 1,702 kilometres north of Perth, Port Hedland is home to fewer than 18,000 people, yet it carries an economic workload completely out of proportion to its population. The town sits at the end of a vast network of mines, processing plants, railway lines and stockyards feeding what Pilbara Ports describes as the world’s largest bulk export port.
If Port Hedland is not the beating heart of the Australian economy, it is certainly one of its main arteries.
During the 2024–25 financial year, 577.7 million tonnes of cargo passed through the Port of Port Hedland. Across its four operational ports, Pilbara Ports handled approximately 81 per cent of Australia’s iron-ore trade and 43 per cent of global iron-ore trade, underlining the extraordinary economic significance of the region.
The shipping figures are equally difficult to comprehend from the other side of the country.
During the first five months of 2026, Port Hedland recorded 1,259 distinct iron-ore vessel visits. That averages more than 58 ships a week, or eight to nine iron-ore carriers every day.
In May alone, 275 iron-ore vessels loaded 51.03 million tonnes for export. That equates to just over 62 ships a week, carrying an average of approximately 185,000 tonnes of ore per vessel visit.
The ore ships waiting beyond the harbour are the visible end of an immense inland production system. Before a tonne of iron ore reaches a vessel, it must be mined, crushed, processed, loaded onto a train, hauled hundreds of kilometres to the coast, unloaded, stockpiled, blended and transferred along conveyors to the shiploader.
Every stage depends on machinery, and every machine depends on somebody keeping it fuelled, lubricated, serviced and repaired.
That is where companies such as Port Hedland-based Finmec enter the picture.
Finmec does not mine the ore or haul it to the harbour. Its trucks, equipment and technicians support the machines and infrastructure that do. They work around the mines, along the rail corridors and inside the industrial operations surrounding the port, helping maintain the continuous flow of material towards the waiting ships.
Where heat becomes an engineering problem
The Pilbara is not an environment that treats machinery gently.
Port Hedland has an annual mean maximum temperature of 33.4°C and averages approximately 269 days each year at or above 30°C. Around 142 days exceed 35°C, while temperatures reach or exceed 40°C on an average of 31 days a year. The highest recorded temperature at Port Hedland Airport is 49°C.
Those numbers are more than climate statistics. They are engineering considerations.
Heat places sustained pressure on cooling systems, air-conditioning equipment, electrical components, batteries, hydraulic systems, tyres and lubricants. Fine red dust works its way into connectors, seals, hinges and moving components. Corrugated access roads feed vibration through chassis rails, body mounts, tanks, toolboxes and delicate service equipment.
A vehicle that spends most of its working life away from sealed roads must withstand a punishment that cannot be replicated by looking at its highway kilometres alone.
Many of these trucks also spend long periods stationary with their engines running while operating cranes, pumps, compressors or other auxiliary equipment. The odometer may barely move while engine hours continue accumulating and the truck keeps working.
It is an operating environment that rewards strong basic engineering and exposes shortcuts quickly.
“We pride ourselves on being responsive, reliable, and capable of handling the conditions in the north-west of the state,” says Daniel Finch, who owns and operates Finmec with his wife, Jessica.
Finmec provides repair, maintenance and equipment hire services across Western Australia’s mining, transport and civil sectors. Its capabilities extend across heavy-duty diesel mechanics, auto-electrical work, fabrication, maintenance electrical services and site supervision.
“We started with a single ute in 2007 and now Finmec employs almost 100 people locally in Port Hedland,” Daniel says.
“We’re proud to be a Hedland business, serving Hedland’s industries. We’ve built our reputation on reliability, expertise and innovation, with a team of heavy-duty diesel mechanics, auto-electricians, boilermakers, maintenance electricians, service persons and supervisors.”

Filling the gaps
Finmec became an authorised independent Scania dealer in 2016, responding to the increasing number of Scania trucks working throughout the Pilbara.
The company’s expansion into equipment rental began when Daniel and Jessica recognised that operators needed more than conventional workshop support. A mine, rail contractor or civil project might require a replacement vehicle following an unexpected breakdown, additional equipment for a short-term contract or specialised machinery that was not economical to own permanently.
“We have been a Scania dealer since 2016 and have watched and encouraged the growth of Scania’s business up here,” Daniel says.
“Around seven years ago we started hiring out equipment because we saw a gap in the market, driven by unexpected breakdowns or because customers need someone to support the equipment they have on site.”
Finmec’s rental fleet now includes a substantial collection of Scania trucks in 6×4, 8×4 and 4×4 configurations, supported by loaders, graders, ’dozers and skid-steer loaders.
These are not standard road trucks with a flashing light fitted to the roof and a mine flag attached to the bullbar. Many have been developed around specific operational roles, with bodies, cranes, tanks, tool storage and safety equipment configured for the work they will perform.
“Currently we have a substantial Scania-based hire fleet operating across the Pilbara with a mix of 6×4, 8×4 and 4×4,” Daniel says.
“We chose Scania because conditions in the Pilbara are very tough. About 80 per cent of our fleet works in off-road conditions, traversing gravel access roads to rail and mine sites. We have found that Scanias handle those conditions capably and reliably.”

Kilometres tell only half the story
Finmec typically retains its hire trucks for between five and seven years before selling them into the used-equipment market.
The objective is to keep modern, comparatively low-hour equipment in frontline service. It also means maintenance must be based on how the vehicle is actually used rather than relying exclusively on distance travelled.
“We want low-hour, high-quality equipment in the field,” Daniel explains.
“We run service intervals on these vehicles over kilometres and working hours because often they are working when they are not moving.”
That distinction is important for service trucks and rail maintenance vehicles. A truck may travel only a modest distance before spending much of its shift stationary, operating pumps, transferring fluids, lifting equipment or providing power for auxiliary systems.
Under those conditions, an engine-hour meter can reveal far more about the truck’s workload than its odometer.
“Some of the standout Scania features are the heavy-duty chassis and drivetrain that handle the vibrations from the road surface, and also the dust and heat, even when fully loaded,” Daniel says.
“Scanias have a really good payload, which improves our rental fleet’s productivity for our customers.”
Payload is particularly valuable in ancillary applications. Every additional kilogram of tare weight reduces the fuel, water, lubricants, tools or equipment the vehicle can legally carry. A body installation must therefore provide the strength needed for mine and rail work without consuming an unnecessary proportion of the available axle capacity.

A workplace on wheels
The truck is also a workplace, and in the Pilbara that workplace may be occupied for an entire shift.
Drivers can spend hours travelling over corrugated access roads before arriving at a remote job. Once there, they may operate the vehicle’s equipment, complete a repair and then face another long drive back to the workshop or accommodation camp.
“Another feature is the operator comfort of the Scania truck,” Daniel says.
“The air suspension, digital dashboard and seats are all features that make enduring a long, hard shift much more manageable.”
Comfort in this environment is not simply about making a truck pleasant to drive. Reducing the physical punishment transmitted to the driver can contribute to fatigue management, concentration and more consistent vehicle operation.
Safety and fatigue reduction are therefore significant considerations for Finmec’s on-road and off-road fleet.
“I would definitely mention Scania’s safety systems, like the side airbags and crash-tested steel cab structures,” Daniel says. “That’s all extremely important in the mining industry.”

The 6×4 workhorses
Finmec’s 6×4 Scanias perform many of the traditional support roles found around large mining operations.
Service trucks carry fuel, engine oil, hydraulic oil, coolant and other consumables required to keep heavy equipment operating. Instead of bringing a loader, haul truck or earthmover back to a central workshop, the service vehicle takes the workshop consumables to the machine.
“We use the Scania 6x4s as service trucks carrying oil, fuel and coolant to service the mining and truck fleet,” Daniel says.
Finmec also operates Scania water carts capable of carrying 14,000 litres.
Water carts are an unglamorous but essential part of mining, port and civil operations. By applying water to unsealed surfaces, they suppress dust, improve visibility and help maintain safer working conditions for vehicles and personnel.
“We have water carts that can carry 14,000 litres of water to undertake dust suppression on the port and the mines,” Daniel says.
The 6×4 fleet also includes tippers used to transport ore, waste material and general site-clean-up loads.
The jobs may appear straightforward, but the operating environment is not. Constant low-speed work, high ambient temperatures, dust and repeated movement over uneven surfaces demand a cooling package, driveline and chassis capable of handling sustained industrial use.

Mobile workshops for the railway
The railway systems feeding Port Hedland are among the most productive heavy-haul rail operations in the world. Their ability to deliver ore to the coast is just as important as the mine’s ability to extract it.
Finmec’s 8×4 Scanias support both mine and rail operations, where their additional axle capacity provides the payload and stability required for larger service bodies, cranes and tool storage.
“With the 8x4s, we’re running service trucks and tool trucks,” Daniel says.
“Tool trucks are used on the rail sites with a crane on the back to move rails, tools and equipment around the site.”
A rail tool truck is effectively a mobile workshop and materials handler. It must carry the equipment required by the repair crew, travel over rough access tracks and provide sufficient lifting capacity to position heavy tools, components and sections of rail.
The value of that truck is not measured simply by how much freight it carries. It is measured by how rapidly it can place a maintenance crew and the correct equipment beside a problem.
When a railway is feeding an export operation moving hundreds of millions of tonnes each year, there is little value in sending technicians to a job without the tools and materials they need to complete it.

The Pilbara multi-tool
Finmec’s Scania 4x4s are the fleet’s multi-tools.
Depending on the body fitted behind the cab, the same basic chassis can transport passengers, carry freight, support maintenance crews or operate as a high-payload alternative to a conventional light vehicle.
“We have converted three 4x4s into 32-passenger off-road buses to move crews to rail sites or around mine sites,” Daniel says. “The bodies have been built in Perth by Able Truck and Bus.”
Moving a full crew into remote work areas calls for more than seating capacity. The vehicle must provide off-road mobility, rollover protection, occupant restraint systems, air-conditioning performance and the structural durability required for regular operation over mine and rail access roads.
Finmec also operates 4×4 Scanias fitted with flat trays.
“They’re an ancillary truck that works around the port, rail or mine sites, effectively as a go-anywhere ute with a substantial payload and all of Scania’s safety features,” Daniel says.
That description captures the vehicle’s role neatly. It provides the mobility expected of a four-wheel-drive utility while carrying loads that would quickly overwhelm a conventional ute.
The newest development is a Scania CrewCab 4×4 fitted with an enclosed service body for rail maintenance work.
“Now we’re building some new Scania CrewCab 4x4s with an enclosed tray to carry all the rail tooling, oxy and acetylene bottles for welding, and there’s a tail lift on the back,” Daniel says.
“They really are versatile because they can carry between one and five crew, plus the body is all set up to go down rail sites and make repairs.”
The combination of crew accommodation, enclosed storage and a tail lift allows the truck to transport people, tools and repair equipment as one self-contained unit. It reduces the need to dispatch several smaller vehicles and gives the maintenance team better control over its equipment.
“We have been using the 4×4 flat trays over the past year and they have been performing really well,” Daniel says.
“That’s why we built the new 32-passenger crew buses and the ManHaul trucks on this chassis, because it just does the job. When they are all in service, there will be 11 P 280 4x4s in the rental fleet.”

Standardisation with a purpose
Fleet standardisation is often discussed in terms of purchasing convenience, but its operational benefits go much deeper.
Using a common truck brand reduces the number of diagnostic systems, service procedures and spare parts that Finmec must support. Technicians become more familiar with recurring maintenance tasks, workshop equipment can be standardised and parts holdings can be targeted towards known fleet requirements.
Finmec’s position as a Scania service dealer strengthens that equation.
“We’re standardising on Scania trucks not only because we’re a Scania service dealer, with easy access to parts and experienced technicians to look after them, but because the trucks perform in the field,” Daniel says.
“Uptime is what’s critical in mining. The reliability and performance of the Scanias have really been proven in these harsh off-road conditions.”
Finmec’s vehicles do not remain within convenient reach of its Port Hedland workshop. Rental trucks may be dispatched throughout the Pilbara, requiring support from a wider regional network.
“The Scania network in WA is doing a good job for us as well, as we have our rental trucks working all over the Pilbara,” Daniel says.
“There are dealers in Newman and Karratha, so if one of our rented trucks is working in another area, we’re confident there’s a Scania dealer to support our customers, in addition to the Scania-owned branch in Kewdale and the new regional parts warehouse in Hope Valley.”

Backing the next project
Building a specialist rental fleet requires considerable capital.
The truck is only the starting point. Service bodies, tanks, pumps, cranes, tail lifts, mine-compliance equipment, communications systems and specialised passenger bodies can turn each unit into a substantial investment before it earns its first rental dollar.
Finmec has recently started using Scania Finance Australia to fund new additions to the fleet.
“We’ve been dealing with Tori Caton and Wayne Thomason, who have been great,” Daniel says.
“The benefit for us is that they understand the equipment, they understand our business as a Scania dealer and they’ve been responsive when we needed to move quickly on new projects.”
For a rental company, the ability to respond quickly can determine whether it wins or loses a contract. A customer requiring additional equipment cannot necessarily wait while a conventional finance application works its way through an institution unfamiliar with the machinery or its intended role.
“Wayne, the Country Manager for Scania Finance Australia, even brought his boss out to visit us from Malaysia, and that shows their interest in us as a customer,” Daniel says.
“I’d say their finance offer is competitive. They have a focus on helping small and medium-sized businesses and are easier to deal with.
“For us, the size we are and the dealership link means we’re buying into the Scania solutions programme. But we have also set up a funding facility, and this gives us as business owners the confidence that if we win a new project, we can finance the equipment we need and get to work quickly.”
The facility effectively gives Finmec room to act when the next project arrives. Instead of beginning the finance process after winning the work, Daniel and Jessica know there is an established pathway for acquiring and building the required vehicles.

Supporting the trucks already at work
Finmec’s relationship with Scania extends beyond its own rental fleet.
As an authorised service agent, the company maintains Scania mining trucks operated by major resource companies, private miners, transport operators and contractors throughout the region.
“As a service agent for Scania, we’re looking after mining trucks operated by the major mining companies as well as the smaller private miners and private haul or service-vehicle operators,” Daniel says.
“I’ve been up here for 18 years in the mining industry, and I’d suggest Scania is one of the most utilised trucks by a lot of mining clients.
“In the ancillary or non-haulage side, there’s been significant growth over the past 10 to 15 years in Scania’s penetration of mining. That’s why we became a Scania dealer, because we saw the growth and recognised there was a job to do in supporting all these vehicles.”

Selling support rather than machinery
Although mining and rail provide most of Finmec’s work, the company’s rental fleet also supports civil construction, quarries and engineering projects.
“We’re not wholly focused on mining,” Daniel says.
“We rent equipment to civil construction companies and quarries, as well as engineering companies. For example, if they have a project and need to move some big gear, we can support them.
“But predominantly our business is mining and rail, which are also very closely interconnected.”
That connection brings the story back to the harbour.
“Port Hedland is the world’s biggest bulk export port, so we’re active in supporting the port,” Daniel says.
“Without rail, a lot of that tonnage coming from the mines wouldn’t get through.”
Finmec’s point of difference is not simply the number of trucks or machines it can provide. The company sells support as part of the rental package.
“We see our difference in that we have the back-up support as an integral part of our hiring offer,” Daniel explains.
“We have the workshop, the technicians, the know-how to fix things and access to the parts.
“Our guys are already inducted into the sites, so they can get access easily. We can speed up the repair and reduce downtime. That’s our biggest focus.”
In remote industrial operations, the person repairing a machine must have the correct site induction, training and authorisation before reaching it. Having technicians already inducted into customers’ sites removes another delay from the repair process.
It is a capability that may be difficult to attach to a conventional hourly rate, but its value becomes obvious when equipment stops.
“An hour of downtime could mean millions in lost production,” Daniel says.

A small cog in a very large machine
Beyond Port Hedland’s harbour, another loaded ore carrier is preparing to sail while the next vessel waits its turn.
Behind it, conveyors are moving, stockpiles are being managed, trains are arriving and empty wagons are beginning the long return journey inland. At the mines, diggers, loaders, haul trucks and processing equipment continue feeding the system.
Finmec’s service trucks, tool carriers, water carts, buses and mobile workshops are small components within that enormous production chain.
But an export system is only as dependable as the individual machines supporting it.
By building a rental fleet around the realities of Pilbara operation, Daniel and Jessica Finch have created more than a collection of trucks for hire. They have developed a locally based support network capable of delivering the vehicle, the technicians and the parts needed to keep it working.
In a town loading around 60 iron-ore ships every week, that support is not simply convenient.
It is part of what keeps Port Hedland, the Pilbara and one of Australia’s most important economic arteries moving.
