For years, the refrigerated transport industry has been fed the same story: if you want serious cooling performance, you need a diesel refrigeration unit hanging off the front of the trailer, rattling away through the night, burning fuel by the hour, disturbing nearby residents during after-hours deliveries, and quietly draining thousands of dollars from operating budgets while everyone accepts it as “just part of the job.”

But somewhere between Sydney and Brisbane, hauling temperature-controlled freight through the harsh realities of Australian linehaul work, that old assumption started looking very shaky indeed.

It works. Properly. In Australia. On real freight tasks. In real temperatures. On real roads.
And now they’re bringing that technology directly to TruckShowX 2026.
Held in the Hunter Valley on 18–19 May, TruckShowX has quickly become one of the transport industry’s most important meeting grounds for fleet operators, logistics managers, suppliers, and technology innovators. It’s where transport companies go to separate genuine commercial solutions from expensive marketing exercises dressed up as innovation.

On display across the two-day event will be the Sunswap Endurance, a fully integrated solar-electric transport refrigeration unit that is quietly redefining what refrigerated freight can look like in Australia. Not someday. Right now.
And unlike many so-called “green” transport concepts that arrive with an asterisk beside the range figures, the Sunswap Endurance already has the kilometres on the board.
Recently, Protran Solutions completed what is understood to be the world’s longest zero-emission solar-charged refrigerated transport trial: a 1,671-kilometre return journey between Sydney and Brisbane, completed entirely using battery-electric refrigeration supported by onboard solar charging. Even more remarkable was the fact the system still retained 62 per cent battery capacity at the conclusion of the run.
Then came another demanding assignment: more than 1,200 kilometres from Sydney to Canberra to Griffith and return, operating at a constant -5°C over a 36-hour duty cycle. At the end of that journey, the system still held 67 per cent battery capacity.
That is the point where this conversation stops being about environmental marketing and starts becoming commercially very interesting indeed.
Because transport operators are not looking for science projects. They are looking for reliability, uptime, operating range, reduced fuel exposure, lower servicing costs, reduced community noise complaints, and systems that can survive Australian freight work without needing excuses made for them six months later.
The Sunswap Endurance appears to have been designed with exactly that reality in mind.
Importantly, this is not a diesel refrigeration unit retrofitted with an electric motor in an attempt to follow market trends. The Endurance was engineered from the ground up as an integrated electric refrigeration platform, combining battery systems, solar harvesting capability, and refrigeration technology into a single purpose-built package.

Roof-Mounted Solar Panels
The roof-mounted solar panels continuously gather energy during ordinary daylight operations, whether the trailer is rolling down the highway, sitting in a loading dock, or parked in a depot yard waiting for its next run. That harvested energy helps maintain battery charge levels without requiring operator intervention, dramatically reducing reliance on charging infrastructure.
In practical terms, it means the trailer spends more time working and less time tethered to charging stations.
For operators dealing with urban deliveries, another major advantage is noise reduction. Traditional diesel-powered refrigeration units have long been tolerated rather than loved, particularly in metropolitan distribution environments where after-hours deliveries increasingly attract scrutiny from residents and regulators alike. A near-silent refrigeration system capable of maintaining temperatures down to -25°C changes that conversation considerably.
Protran Solutions General Manager Grant Turner believes the timing for the technology could not be more relevant.

And perhaps that is what makes this particular story so compelling.
For decades, refrigeration technology has changed surprisingly little beneath the surface. Engines became cleaner. Controls became smarter. Packaging improved. But fundamentally, most refrigerated trailers still relied on the same diesel-powered thinking that has been rattling away behind loading docks since shoulder pads and mullets were considered perfectly acceptable business attire.
The Sunswap Endurance represents something different. Not an incremental improvement. A genuine rethink of how refrigerated freight energy can be generated and managed altogether.
At TruckShowX 2026, operators will not simply be hearing about the technology second-hand either. Turner will take part in the event’s “Innovative Energy Security” main-stage session on Tuesday 19 May, discussing the growing role solar technology can play in freight operations facing mounting emissions pressures, rising diesel costs, and increasingly demanding customer sustainability targets.
Joining him at the event will be Sunswap founder and CEO Michael Lowe, giving operators the rare opportunity to speak directly with the people behind the technology and ask the difficult operational questions transport companies rightly demand answers to before investing in new systems.
And that may ultimately be where this technology wins its greatest credibility. Not because it sounds impressive in a press release. But because it has already done the hard kilometres first.
