How a former firefighter built one of Australia’s most versatile delivery fleets. One problem, one truck, and one opportunity at a time
For Fork2U founder Peter McCormack, reliability was never negotiable. After a career in the fire brigade, he built his delivery fleet around Scania 420P rigid trucks, combining dependable Swedish engineering with rear-mounted Manitou telehandlers to create one of Australia’s most versatile pallet delivery operations.

The yard is already alive when most of Melbourne is still asleep.
It’s just after four in the morning, and under the yellow glow of sodium vapour lights, forklifts weave between rigid trucks with the quiet urgency of a well-rehearsed operation. Pallets of freshly cut turf arrive in bulk, still damp from the paddock. Others hold bricks stacked in perfect symmetry, timber flooring wrapped tight against the night air, scaffolding components, drainage pipe, machinery parts, and the endless variety of goods that keep a modern city growing.
Within minutes, loads are broken down, reshuffled, and redistributed across a fleet of waiting trucks, each one destined for a different corner of Melbourne or beyond.
By sunrise, most will be empty.
By mid-morning, they will be loaded again.
This is the daily rhythm at Fork2U, a business built on solving a problem most people never think about until they find themselves standing on a construction site, staring at a truck full of materials they have no way to unload.
For Peter McCormack, that problem became the foundation of an entire fleet.
Maintaining Engines
Peter did not start out in transport. His working life began in workshops and fire stations, surrounded by machinery and discipline rather than delivery schedules and pallet counts.
He trained as a mechanic at Detroit Diesel, working closely with fire brigade workshops, maintaining engines, transmissions, and driveline systems that powered emergency response vehicles. It was hands-on work that demanded precision and reliability, and it instilled an appreciation for machinery that could not afford to fail.
Eventually, Peter crossed over fully into the fire brigade, where he would spend the next 31 years.
He drove ladder trucks, including a towering Magirus-Deutz fitted with a 100-foot aerial ladder, responding to emergencies where calm thinking and dependable equipment were essential. It was demanding work that required both technical skill and emotional control, and it shaped the way he would later approach business.
Firefighting teaches you to think clearly under pressure. It teaches you that preparation matters. And it teaches you that equipment is only as valuable as its reliability when you need it most.
Those lessons would stay with him.
Long before Fork2U existed, Peter had already begun to notice a different kind of problem.

Glue Together
He had moved into construction, building homes using glue-together block systems and eventually becoming a distributor for the product. As both a builder and supplier, he spent countless hours coordinating deliveries of palletised materials.
The trucks would arrive. The materials would be there. But the equipment to unload them often was not. Construction sites did not always have forklifts available. Deliveries were delayed. Crews waited. Progress stalled. Peter realised the problem was not transport.
It was capability.
So he did something simple. He put the forklift on the truck.
Each rigid truck carried its own Manitou telehandler mounted on the rear, allowing the driver to load and unload independently of site infrastructure. It removed the reliance on external equipment and eliminated delays that could cost builders hours or days.
What began as a practical solution for his own construction projects quickly revealed itself as a standalone business opportunity.
Demand followed. Then growth.

Today, Fork2U operates a fleet of seventeen Scania rigid trucks across Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, delivering palletised goods ranging from turf and tiles to engineering components, government infrastructure equipment, and specialised freight.
Each truck functions as a fully self-contained delivery unit.
“Our bread and butter is tiles and turf,” Peter explains. “But we carry everything. Sometimes we will have twelve pallets on the truck for twelve different customers. Once the last delivery is done, the truck might go straight to pick up another load and continue working.”
It is logistics stripped back to its most efficient form.

Standardise on Scania
Central to that capability is the truck itself, and Peter’s decision to standardise on Scania was driven by experience rather than branding.
The backbone of the fleet is built around Scania P-series rigid trucks, including the highly versatile Scania P420 configured in both 8×2 and 8×4 layouts depending on operational requirements.
At the heart of the 420P is Scania’s 12.7-litre inline six-cylinder engine, producing 420 horsepower and delivering torque in excess of 2,100 Newton metres. It is an engine designed not for outright speed, but for consistent, usable pulling power across the rev range.
That torque matters when a rigid truck is carrying a full palletised load, combined with the weight of a rear-mounted Manitou telehandler. The additional equipment adds both mass and complexity, and the driveline must deliver smooth, predictable performance whether navigating suburban streets or pulling away from uneven construction sites.
Matched to the engine is Scania’s Opticruise automated transmission, a system refined over decades to deliver smooth gear changes and optimal fuel efficiency. In urban delivery work, where trucks are constantly stopping, starting, and manoeuvring, the transmission reduces driver fatigue while maintaining mechanical efficiency.
The gearbox works seamlessly with Scania’s electronically controlled braking systems, including integrated engine braking and auxiliary retardation. This provides strong and consistent downhill control, particularly valuable when descending steep access roads into building sites or navigating heavily loaded urban routes.
The 8×4 configuration adds another dimension of capability.
With two front steer axles and twin rear drive axles, the 8×4 layout distributes weight more effectively across the chassis, allowing higher payload capacity while maintaining legal axle limits. It also improves stability when carrying uneven or shifting loads, something particularly relevant when transporting mixed pallet freight combined with mounted telehandlers.
The chassis itself is engineered for durability, with high tensile steel rails designed to withstand constant loading and unloading cycles. The wheelbase is carefully selected to balance manoeuvrability with load carrying capacity, allowing the trucks to operate efficiently in tight urban environments without sacrificing structural strength.
Suspension plays a critical role as well. Air suspension systems provide improved ride quality, protecting both the vehicle and its cargo from excessive vibration. This is especially important when transporting fragile materials such as tiles, glass panels, or finished timber products.
Inside the cab, the P-series provides a workspace designed for practicality and comfort.

Long Hours Behind the Wheel
Drivers spend long hours behind the wheel, often moving between multiple delivery points each day. The upright driving position, excellent visibility, and ergonomic controls reduce fatigue and improve situational awareness. Large mirrors and carefully designed sightlines allow drivers to manoeuvre safely in confined spaces, whether reversing into a suburban driveway or positioning alongside a busy construction site.
Fuel efficiency remains one of the defining strengths of the platform.
“We do a Mildura run every five weeks,” Peter says. “The new trucks can do the whole trip on a single tank. That makes a huge difference to operating costs.”
Idle shutdown systems further reduce unnecessary fuel consumption, automatically switching off the engine when stationary for extended periods. Over time, these incremental savings accumulate across the fleet.
Service support has also been critical.
Scania’s Laverton workshop performs maintenance overnight, ensuring trucks remain operational during the day. Predictable servicing schedules and strong parts availability reduce downtime and provide cost certainty.
It is exactly the kind of operational reliability Peter values.
Back in the yard, the results of those decisions are visible every morning.
Bulk loads arrive overnight, collected from suppliers and returned to the depot. Freight is broken down and redistributed across the delivery fleet, allowing multiple customers to be serviced efficiently in a single run.

Some deliveries are routine. Others are anything but.
Peter recalls delivering generators to the summit of Mount Oberon at Wilson’s Promontory, relocating 760 pallets of automotive parts within 36 hours, and delivering equipment onto Melbourne Airport’s restricted access areas during overnight windows.
“You can only access some locations at certain times,” he says. “The trucks work around the clock.”
The ability to operate independently has made Fork2U indispensable to customers facing tight schedules and complex delivery environments.
The expansion into Queensland followed a familiar pattern.
A customer who had been receiving deliveries from Melbourne asked Peter if he could provide the same service locally in Brisbane. He agreed.
The Queensland operation launched soon after and has grown steadily, supported by the same model that proved successful in Victoria. Solve the problem. Deliver reliably. Let reputation do the rest.
Despite the growth, Peter remains closely connected to the business. He still drives trucks when needed. He still speaks directly with customers. He still monitors operations. It is a hands-on approach rooted in decades of experience.
“I like to stay involved,” he says. “It keeps me connected.”
It also reflects the business’s origins. Fork2U was not built in a boardroom. It was built on construction sites, in workshops, and on the road.
One problem at a time. One truck at a time. One solution at a time.
As the sun rises over the yard and the last trucks roll out through the gate, the morning rush fades into the steady rhythm of the day ahead. Some will deliver turf to new homes. Others will unload machinery, bricks, or specialised equipment. Each will perform a job that, to the outside observer, looks simple.
But behind that simplicity lies careful engineering, thoughtful planning, and machinery selected for reliability above all else. Because in transport, the greatest compliment is invisibility. When everything works exactly as it should, nobody notices. And that is precisely the point.
