CoolTrans Sees Fuel Economy Gains with New Actros ProCabin
There’s an old rule in trucking that says the faster you push a brick through the air, the more diesel you pour into the process. European truck manufacturers have spent decades trying to bend physics around that problem, but now Mercedes-Benz appears to have taken a fairly serious swing at it with the new Actros ProCabin.
And according to Melbourne refrigerated freight operator CoolTrans, the thing actually works.

CoolTrans has quietly slipped one of the first Mercedes-Benz Actros ProCabin models into its east coast fleet, hauling B-Doubles loaded with food products between Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the eastern seaboard. Within weeks, the company reckons it could already see the difference at the fuel bowser.
That’s not marketing department optimism either. That’s the sort of feedback operators only give when they start noticing fewer digits on the diesel invoice.
“The previous Actros really set the standard for fuel economy, but this new one is more efficient again,” says CoolTrans General Manager Jono Hookway.
“It’s a clear improvement, which is great for us.”
Now, in trucking circles, “a clear improvement” is generally code for “this thing is saving enough money that the accountants have stopped twitching.”
And right now, with diesel prices behaving like they’ve been tied to a weather balloon, fuel economy matters more than ever.
“Saving money on fuel has always been important but it is even more so now with the price of fuel,” Hookway says.
“It just makes sense to reduce the costs you can control.”
That sentence right there probably sums up the entire modern transport industry.
Because operators can’t control global politics. They can’t control refinery shutdowns. They can’t control excise, shipping costs or whatever fresh madness appears on the evening news next week. But they can control what’s parked in the yard.
And that’s where Mercedes-Benz believes the ProCabin changes the game.
Wind Tunnel
At first glance, the new Actros looks like someone melted the front of the truck in a wind tunnel. The traditional flat-faced European cab has been rounded off and stretched forward by 80mm, with smoother panel joins, tighter airflow management and fewer gaps for air to tumble into.
In simple terms, Mercedes-Benz has spent a frightening amount of engineering effort trying to convince air not to fight the truck.
The result is a nose shape that guides airflow cleanly around the cab and into the cooling system without creating unnecessary turbulence. There are new sail-style air deflectors behind the cab, revised roof aerodynamics and a redesigned lower spoiler package underneath.
Normally aerodynamic discussions are about as exciting as reading a microwave instruction manual, but in heavy transport they matter enormously. Especially when you’re dragging a B-Double around Australia at highway speeds for hundreds of thousands of kilometres every year.
Once you’re above about 80km/h, air resistance becomes one of the biggest fuel thieves in trucking. Every little improvement starts adding up.
And CoolTrans knows exactly how important that equation is.
The company has been pushing toward lower emissions and better efficiency for years, adopting Euro 6 trucks back in 2018, long before legislation forced anyone’s hand.
“Sustainability is a key part of our operation, which is another reason we choose Mercedes-Benz trucks,” Hookway says.
The new truck itself is hardly short on hardware.
GigaSpace Cab
CoolTrans selected the flagship 2663 variant, packing Mercedes-Benz’s 16-litre six-cylinder engine punching out 630hp, backed by a 12-speed automated manual transmission and topped with the cavernous GigaSpace cab.
And yes, it’s fitted with a DuraBar bullbar. Because this is still Australia, where a kangaroo can materialise out of the darkness at 110km/h with all the tactical awareness of a shopping trolley.
Safety, unsurprisingly, remains a major factor in the purchasing decision.
“Safety is absolutely at the centre of everything we do at CoolTrans, so Mercedes-Benz is a natural choice given how much safety technology they have in their trucks as standard,” Hookway says.
The latest Actros range now carries the Active Brake Assist 6 emergency braking package, supported by five radar systems creating a 270-degree view around the truck.
That system works alongside the updated Active Side Guard Assist setup, helping monitor blind spots and surrounding traffic conditions. Underpinning the entire system is a new electronics platform capable of processing data up to 20 times faster than before.
Which sounds impressive, although most drivers will probably just appreciate the truck helping stop somebody in a Corolla from attempting spontaneous self-destruction beside the steer axle.
Daimler Truck Australia Pacific Vice President Sales, Marketing and Operations Andrew Assimo says customer feedback is already reinforcing what Mercedes-Benz engineers expected from the ProCabin.
“We knew the ProCabin would use less fuel, but to hear our customers tell us how they are benefitting is just brilliant,” Assimo says.
“Driving fuel costs down has never been more critical to business success, which makes the ProCabin an even smarter choice.”
And perhaps that’s the biggest shift happening in trucking right now.
For years, horsepower was the headline number everybody chased. Before that, it was sleeper size. Then safety systems. Then service intervals.
Now? Aerodynamics has become serious business.
Because when diesel starts climbing toward eye-watering territory, suddenly the shape of the truck matters almost as much as the engine underneath it.
Which means the modern prime mover is no longer just a truck.
It’s a giant, 630-horsepower science experiment designed to cheat the wind.
