Laid out at Elphinstone Engineering’s Triabunna factory in Tasmania are three brand-new Easyloader logging trailers, each spec’d a little differently. This trio, poised for delivery, highlights the remarkable flexibility of the Easyloader trailer platform. It’s not often that a logging trailer becomes the star of the show – yet Elphinstone’s Easyloader has rightly earned a reputation as a standout in today’s competitive markets.

The Easyloader embodies all of that history and hard-earned wisdom, but propels it into the future with a bold stroke of innovation. It takes a familiar B-Double logging setup and injects a clever self-loading twist that addresses old challenges in new ways.

That DNA of toughness and technology is infused in the Easyloader’s design, making it well-suited to the “no excuses” environment of modern logging work. Not surprisingly, the Easyloader’s unique concept was turning heads from its earliest iterations – the first Easyloader combination launched in the late 1990s won an industry award for “Most Innovative Trailer of the Year”. What Makes the Easyloader Trailers Unique?

In other words, an empty truck with an Easyloader isn’t empty – it has enough weight over the drive wheels to bite into gravel and climb hills that would leave ordinary empty rigs slipping. Flexible Configurations: The Easyloader trailer platform is extremely versatile. Elphinstone offers Easyloader combinations in a range of axle configurations and lengths to suit different needs – from compact 19-metre tandem-tandem mini-B-Doubles, up through tandem-tri and tri-tri B-Double sets, all the way to multi-trailer road train setups like A-Doubles and even B-Triples. This modular approach allows operators to choose the configuration that best balances payload, manoeuvrability, and route access for their specific operations. One popular spec is the tandem-tri B-Double, as it offers exceptional stability and a generous payload while enjoying greater route access in many regions than heavier tri-tri combinations.

Traction-Assist Lift Axle: For unpaved bush tracks and tight turns, the Easyloader features a traction-assist option on specific models. For example, on the tandem-axle Link-a-Skel (the lead trailer unit), one axle can be lifted by the driver at low speeds (under ~30 km/h), effectively converting it into a single-axle trailer when needed. This dramatically improves manoeuvrability in cramped log loading areas and reduces scuffing and damage to fragile dirt roads. Once back on better roads or at higher speeds, the axle is dropped again. It’s a smart way to get the best of both worlds: stability on highway runs and agility in the bush.

Integrated Weighing and Load Security: Every Easyloader comes standard with Elphinstone’s EasyWeigh on-board weighing system, a product of the company’s decades of experience in loadcell and air transducer technology. This enables drivers to know their exact load weight in real-time, ensuring they operate within the maximum legal payload without guesswork. Additionally, the trailers can be fitted with automatic load binders (strap or chain tensioners) that keep constant tension on the log load as you travel. Together, these features mean each trip can be loaded to the optimal weight and the logs stay snug and secure, improving safety and compliance.

Durable, Modular Construction: Logging is hard on equipment, so the Easyloader is built with durability and serviceability in mind. The chassis frames are fully bolted together (rather than welded), a design approach that has proven itself over millions of kilometres by allowing flex and preventing fatigue. This option alone reduces the combination’s tare weight by approximately 1,600 kg, directly translating to increased payload capacity. Depending on customer needs, Easyloader sets can be tailored for the lightest possible tare and maximum versatility, providing operations with the flexibility to choose what is most essential for their specific requirements.
